Swiss Benevolent Society of Washington DC
Founded 1865

1865 was an important year for the United States. The Civil War was over, the country was charting a new course, and the Swiss Benevolent Society of Washington DC (SBS) was founded. It was the first organization of Swiss compatriots in the Washington DC area and began with the mission to help settlers from Switzerland to weather financial hardship.
Over the years, the mission was expanded to include caring for the elderly and ill, providing a scholarship program for post-high school education, and helping the nearby Swiss community of Helvetia, WV. Each addition to the mission focused on those in need in the local Swiss community.
Today the SBS is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization, which allows contributions to be fully tax deductible. It is governed by a Board of Trustees who are all volunteers; therefore, there is very little overhead expense. The result is that all contributions are available for those who need it most.
Since its inception, the SBS has had a close relationship with the Swiss Embassy. The Swiss General Consul serves as an ex-officio member of our Board, and he or she informs the Society of Swiss in the area who have needs that are not being met by the Swiss government, so we can assist.
For most of the Society’s existence, the focus of our support to the Washington DC Swiss community was direct financial assistance to individuals. This assistance continues today. However, there are all variety of needs we help with - many with lower financial commitments. For example, we monitor elderly, ill or lonely Swiss in the area who may benefit from our attention. They are visited, care is offered, grocery gift cards and flowers are given. These offerings and gestures are always appreciated, and the response of the recipients is heart-warming.
Over these many years, the SBS and its board, donors and volunteers have given their hearts, their money and their time to support those who may benefit the most. Every act of service or support creates a better life for the recipient and therefore, builds a better and stronger community of Swiss in the greater Washington DC area.
